Club History: NSW

Following a Toyota Australia sponsored Driver Training Day at Calder Park in early 1991, a group of enthusiastic owners got together with the idea of forming a club. With assistance from Toyota by way of mail outs and provision of a meeting venue, The MR2 Owners Club of Australia (Victorian Branch) Inc. was formed in June 1991.

The first official event was a drive day to Sorento outside Melbourne in September 1991 with a total of 18 cars including 5 AW11 Model MR2’s (1985-89) and the balance SW20’s (1990 +). Further north in Sydney in May 1992 after being approached by a keen MR2 owner, Toyota Australia and the Victorian branch assisted him in setting up a New South Wales branch of the club.

A Mail out resulted in the first NSW run with 13 cars in attendance for a drive day to Jenolan Caves, west of Sydney. After forming a committee from some of these owners the MR2 Owners Club of Australia (NSW Branch) Inc was also formed in late 1992. Today both branches have between 35-50 members each.

They participate in a wide range of activities including Driver Education, club level motorsport, picnic drive days, technical evenings and weekends away including interstate activities with both branches. The club aims to appeal to enthusiastic owners who see their car as more than just a means of transport and enjoy social activities involving motorcars, and like minded people.

Many of the clubs members also benefit greatly form the Driver Education activities which improve members skills on the road and help to create safe better drivers.
