The Queensland Branch of the MR2 Owners Club began in February 2000. I had been a member of the Nissan Club and was looking for something a bit faster and started checking out the 300ZX twin turbo. It was fast and had the sporty looks – but it still felt big and heavy. Not long after I started looking around, a red MR2 appeared in a car yard around the corner from where I worked. Everyday I drove past it, the idea of owning an MR2 became more and more appealing – then I decided to take my Pulsar in and get a trade-in valuation. The numbers were right and I was soon the proud new owner of that MR2.
I didn’t know much about the car and there were a few minor things which needing fixing so I thought it would be a good idea to join the MR2 Club. So I checked the Yellow Pages – nothing!!! I checked the Internet and car magazines but there just didn’t seem to be an MR2 club in Queensland – so I thought I might as well start one up. I put an ad in the Yellow Pages and car magazines, and made up some brochures to put under the windscreen wipers of any MR2’s I saw parked. Before long I started getting some phone calls from people interested in joining and we fixed a date for our first meeting – a cruise to Maleny in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. We started from the Caltex garage at Carseldine on the northern outskirts of Brisbane. I can still remember arriving at the garage on a clear sunny morning and there were already 4 or 5 other MR2s there. We ended up with 9 cars on the cruise. I had never seen so many MR2s together at the same time – it was and amazing sight and it was a really great feeling knowing that I had made it all happen. – Graham Hobbs
MR2 Club of Queensland invites you to join them on their monthly cruise days. We operate out of the forums on the www.mr2.org.au which is Australia wide. The site is also good for asking mechanical and non-mechanical questions alike.
The Mr2 club of QLD is a great chance to see other people’s Mr2’s and ask as many questions as you’d like. From performance to looks, there will be someone there to help if you wish. The age group in the club ranges from 18-56, so age is no barrier.
Basically all we want to do is get as many Mr2’s in one place at one time and go driving. The club organises a different place each month so it’s also a great way to see our great QLD SE countryside.
